Godzilla King of the Monsters DLLorenzo Movie Review

Godzilla:King of the Monsters is a 2019 movie that follows on a sequel from Godzilla (2014), it is the 35th film in the Godzilla franchise, the third film in Legendary's Monsterverse and the third Godzilla film produced by a Hollywood studio.

The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient superspecies, thought to be mere myths, rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity's very existence hanging in the balance.
As the world is still recovering from the fact that monsters exist, they face a new threat: the return of the Titans. Now the crypto-zoological agency Monarch has only one chance to stop them: let Godzilla fight it out as the whole world itself will tremble as it watches Mothra, Rodan, Ghidorah, and Godzilla fight for the title King of the Monsters

4/5 From DLLorenzo

So the thing I liked about this movie it threw it right into the fight and reminded me of the titanic battles in the movie Pacific Rim (2013) one of my favourite films. Godzilla:KOTM follows more directly from Godzilla (2014) and hints towards the Monsterverse that is building with Godzilla and Kong:Skull Island.
Let's just say the scenes from Godzilla (2014) they kind of brought us, the viewers, away from the fight with the giant monsters having the monsters fight in the background as we marvelled the scenes.
This annoyed me in Godzilla and I can happily say this isn't the case with this movie.
We are there in the fights between the giant CGI monstrosities as they're given redesigns from the famous Toho Godzilla over the years, Godzilla retains his look from Godzilla (2014) and all the new monsters of original monsters are redesigned for the modern era. Mothra, Rodan and Ghidorah look incredible.
The movie is an action movie surrounding these giant monsters and follows the dramatic family life surrounding the main human characters. There is a plot but with the giant monster action you tend to forego the plot, the actors do a good job but we are more interested in the giant Kaiju battles. The movie touches upon the Kaiju influencing human history and reveals are aplenty as Legendary and Warner Brothers try to build their Monsterverse.

Spoilers and ideas?

So Monarch has a lot of cool gadets and with Legendary and Warner Brothers doing the movies its not hard to think they may cross over some of their other movies. With Godzilla vs King Kong being the next movie and the new threat thats been revealed to the world that Kaiju's or giant monsters exist, is it hard to think that humanity will try to create new defences or devices to challenge these monsters.

We saw in the movie the destruction caused by the Oxygen bomb. But what if humanity designs something else to combat the growing threat of the Kaiju's, as someone once said in one of Legendary's other movies "In order to fight monsters, we created monsters of our own."

What if they create the first Jaeger for Godzilla vs Kong? That would be pretty cool for me personally but could be quite cheesy for other cinema goers. I love the first Pacific Rim, found the second movie weaker. I love Giant Robots vs Giant Monsters!!

Would be very cool to see if they did a prototype Jaeger and they could do a nod to the old Japanese movies and reinvent Jet Jaguar?!

We also got to see Godzilla's Radiation form AND got to see Ghidorah's regenerative abilities being the famous hydra!  AND the final part of the movie after Godzilla's fight with Ghidorah and the end result! With Godzilla's radioactive belly it doesnt look good for Ghidorah but who knows he may emerge stronger next time powered by radiation in the next film but I dont think we've seen the last of Ghidorah.
It was interesting to hear that Ghidorah came from space upsetting the natural balance of the Titans of Earth creating a new Apex Predator amongst them and challenging Godzilla over the years. So we are assuming the threat to Godzilla will be Kong for the next time and it was hinted he was bigger and stronger as the last time we saw Kong was back in 1973! During the movie it's mentioned there had been flooding and eruptions on Skull Island so perhaps that is how he gets loose?

This is likely a setup to the events of the upcoming Godzilla vs. Kong, but King of the Monsters doesn't stop there. These news clippings end by revealing an image of an ancient cave drawing showing a giant ape going up against Godzilla in a fight. This is meant as a callback to Skull Island's own after-credits scene, which showed a cave drawing depicting a confrontation between Godzilla and Ghidorah. Given Kong's age, though, it's likely that the ape depicted in the cave drawing isn't the King himself, but rather one of his ancestors. However, this goes to show that there is history between the two Titans, and it teases the epic confrontation that is to come.

Also The Hollow Earth theory is first mentioned in Kong: Skull Island. It was developed by Houston Brooks (played by Corey Hawkins in the 2017 film), and it was the main reason for the army's mission to the giant ape's home island. The theory stipulated that there were giant tunnels underneath the Earth's crust, a worldwide network that allowed Titans to hide, move around and go unnoticed for thousands of years. This reappears in Godzilla: KOTM and I reckon it will make a reappearance in Godzilla vs Kong! The theory comes back to the forefront in King of the Monsters when a Monarch submarine discovers Godzilla's secret home, miles beneath the ocean. Not only does the film confirm the theory, it also name drops it a few times. In fact, the character who came up with it, Houston Brooks, briefly appears in King of the Monsters, now much older than he was in the 1973-set Skull Island. This time around, he is played by veteran actor Joe Morton.
