So we had a few revelations in 2020 and now we are in 2021. I started this quick blog to update on what was happening with The Batman movie starring Robert Pattinson and directed by Matt Reeves - this initially dropped during the DC Fandom. I've decided to grow the blog post to show all the latest news concerning the DCEU.
DC FANDOM & THE BATMAN
So DC Fandom happened and we were given so many reveals, news, questions, and content from WB and DC!
From a trailer of the long-awaited Snyder Cut of Justice League we are finally getting 4 years later, we also had a few surprises, a behind the scenes look of James Gunn's Suicide Squad, upcoming DC Animated movies, Black Adam teaser, a new WW84 trailer, Shazam 2 Fury of the Gods (official title), Suicide Squad kill the Justice League, a new Arkham related game called Gotham Knights and then the surprise I wasn't expecting a 2-minute teaser/trailer of the upcoming The Batman movie - I was sure we may get some interview from Matt Reeves, a look at the suit or Batmobile as I'd heard the movie had only had about 25%-30% been completed. This means Matt Reeves had been hard at work, working on a trailer with his team, DC, and WB to make sure it was released at DC fandom.
"For all the Battinson haters, what did I say in forums, don't judge until we see a trailer and we see him play the Batman"
For 2 minutes we got an eye into the new Batman universe created by Matt Reeves, its gloriously dark, gritty, noir and looks incredible. I would still say wait for the movie to judge. I was excited about Matt Reeve's take but to see it in a trailer I was surprised, excited, and enthralled. Ask my partner, she saw me sit through 5 run-throughs of it as I explained each and every moment as I over-analyzed every scene and discussing with friends, family (my mum thinks I'm crazy, my soon to be mother-in-law even more so), and through Batman and DC forums online.
Some people don't like the actor, the suit, or the batmobile but a lot of people converted after seeing the realistic style akin to the Nolan Trilogy, its dark and gritty, and the I am Vengeance scene!
Think Batfleck had a similar scene in the BVS movie where opinions were changed after seeing that brawler bat style in the warehouse when saving Superman's mother. Still one of my favorite action moments.
So I decided this blog post will talk about the upcoming The Batman movie, moments in the trailer, and some of the extra things, from the DC fandom and the current DCEU universe, the Snyder Cut, etc.
I'm hoping to sort out a youtube channel / Podcast at a later point when I get my new home office sorted and sort out a new desktop PC
THE BATMAN TRAILER BREAKDOWN
THE BATMAN UPDATES
- So we got a teaser/trailer of the upcoming The Batman movie codenamed Batman Vengeance at DC Fandom
- None of the fans expected a teaser/trailer, I at the most, expected images, concept art and reveals of the car and more information regarding the new movie, direction, and world that Matt Reeves was creating
- The Batman is due to return to filming from 17/09/2020 which was delayed as the team had several members of the crew catch the Covid-19 virus, it was rumored Pattinson had caught it - different media outlets say the actor and or film crew.
- The movie has now been delayed with other DC movies by 6 months to March 2022, which might help with the covid situation delaying filming several times and potentially will give Matt Reeves and his team longer time to edit and put more time into making the best movie.
- The movie was filming around the Liver Building, St George's Hall and Anfield Cemetary in Liverpool, the Necropolis in Glasgow, and the Warner Bros Studios in Hertfordshire.
- The movie has also been shot around Chicago.
- Pattinson has supposedly mentioned he has been exhausted with the ever-changing schedule and preparing for the role of Batman, with a possible heavy suit, equipment, action choreography, and stunts.
- Despite the United Kingdom is on its 3rd national lockdown during the Coronavirus pandemic, movies and TV series such as The Batman will continue filming
- Due to these delays, the movie release has been changed from October 2021 to March 2022 has begun filming again even during the covid situation.
- There have been rumors of the movie being R-rated.
- The movie is hoped to be wrapped up by February and then will be in production and editing for the rest of the year.
- There have been rumors of discontent through filming, media have cited the lockdown has affected morale on the production
- The latest rumor, a bad rumour was that Pattinson has struck a relationship with Zoe Kravitz, both found together on the Batmobile between shooting, Matt Reeves the director apparently voiced his concerns and it could be that he doesn't want to continue after the first movie because of Pattinson's unprofessionalism. **This I hope is just a rumor and the movie comes out and is great and both continue to do the trilogy or saga they have planned. Isnt that a very bruce thing to do, thats epic and very silly if true.
- Latest update 24/08/2021 there has been some reshoots, rumor is Warner Bros wanted to change some scenes or make the movie slightly shorter.
- We are waiting on more information regarding the Matt Reeves TV series which is called Gotham PD - which will be set in the same universe as the upcoming The Batman movie, not to confuse it with the Gotham TV series which is set in its own Batman universe.
- The premise is this is set in The Batman universe same as the movie and follows the first year with Batman as a vigilante. The movie will be his 2nd year as The Batman.
- This will be similar to the "Gotham Central" comic book as to what the Gotham TV series was like BUT will be more procedural than FOX's version wanted to and will be much darker.
- It will be much darker, touching upon police corruption, originally the plan after series 1 of Gotham but it changed. It will be more like the comic book "Gotham Central". it will touch upon darker more mature themes and assume Batman will appear in some shape or form and could introduce some of the villains from the rogue's gallery to the lower level.
- Matt reeves commented to journalists - “It’s the beginning of the emergence,” he said. “It’s the first appearance of this masked vigilante that starts to unsettle the city. You start to see the story through the point of view of these corrupt cops, and one, in particular, the story is actually a battle for his soul. He’s a cop over generations.”
- The original Gotham TV series was quite a good tv-series and I would love them to appear in the flash movie or a nod to the tv series.
- Concerning that originally the showrunner Terrence Winter (Boardwalk Empire), left the project citing creative differences - a new showrunner has been announced Joe Barton (Giri/Haji, The Ritual)
- The new Tv series is expected to come to HBO Max

THE JUSTICE LEAGUE SNYDER CUT
Thanks to the #SnyderCut hashtag and the work behind the scenes of all the DCEU fans and especially fans of Snyder, we have managed to get the chance to see his cut of the movie before it was heavily edited by Joss Whedon / Geoff Johns and Warner Bros.
- The movie was released as a full 4-hour film on HBO Max, NOW TV, Google Play
- Zack Snyder isn't taking any money from the making of this movie, it is a pure passion project and forego wages or money so he could have creative control over it - AT&T/Warner Bros paid £70 Million to finance the rest of the movie due to the vocal support from tioc fans.
I got a NOW TV account as HBO Max is not in the UK yet and watched the movie 3 times over a 7 day free trial period.
I enjoyed it so much I bought the Blu-ray of the movie when it dropped in the UK.
It was an honour to help and campaign with all the SnyderCut fans over the years to see Zack get his chance to do his version of the movie
WONDER WOMAN 84
So Patty Jenkins and Gal Gadot have worked together again and WW84 has dropped on HBO Max and Cinemas, during the current coronavirus situation most cinemas/theatres are closed, especially here in the UK.
The Third Wonder Woman movie was supposedly greenlit on 27th December 2020 and Gal Gadot when asked in an interview, she advised she wanted it to be set in the present and not in the past like the previous movies.
So far the movie has made over $145 million worldwide, there will supposedly be the 3rd movie, the movie budget was supposed $200 million.
I've seen the movie and personally its my worst DCEU movie even below Birds of Prey, that at least had good action scenes. I found this really hammy, the plot was poor and all over the place.
ZACK SNYDER AND THE FUTURE
So, Zack Snyders, next movie is upon us with Justice League Snyder Cut due to drop, another project he has been working on for the last few years is the movie called "Army of the Dead" with an all-star cast.
"The movie plot revolves around a team of mercenaries who plot a heist to break into a Las Vegas casino during a zombie outbreak."
Apparently, this was due to be produced by Warner Bros / Universal but it had been in production hell since 2008. Netflix acquired the rights to the movie in 2019 and after talks with Snyder, Netflix loved the idea so much they gave Zack the job and have even said they will be doing an Army of the Dead anime and even an Army of the Dead prequel.
There have been some images that started to drop online which looks like the zombies may be fast zombies, which is a nod to Snyders directorial debut, Dawn of the Dead (2004) which was similar to the original cult movie Dawn of the Dead (1978) and is classed as a reboot.
FUN FACT: Dawn of the Dead 2004 was Snyders director debut and the screenplay was from James Gunn.
- Zack has suggested he doesn't have any plans to do any more DC movies after his version of the Justice League. There were leaks as to what JL 2 & 3 would be, these were obtained from a reveal in a Dallas pop up which was then subsequently closed when Warner Bros realised the hype for the movie.
- Since this last update in April 2021, Army of the Dead was a commercial success for Netflix, the prequel Army of Thieves is due to drop in October and many more Army of the Dead prequels and sequels may be created.
- Zack "The Boss" is now teasing his Rebel Moon idea, which is a Star Wars meets Seven Samurai scifi action movie which has been picked up by Netflix.
THE BEN AFFLECK ABANDONED THE BATMAN
So even though we may never see Ben Afflecks take on the Batman, there have been leaks and rumours from good sources to describe his take on the movie. Who knows AT&T who own Warner Brothers love the Batfleck character and with the supposed success of the Justice League movie, this may reboot or rejuvenate the DCEU. It might even reboot the Ben Affleck Batman story.
- Originally Ben Affleck was to star in, direct, write and produce the movie
- The story was apparently dark and Gritty
- It involved Arkham Asylum
- Joe Manganiello was due to star as Deathstroke as the main villain
- The story would see Deathstroke attacking Batman's life and affecting his life as Bruce Wayne, which involved lots of action and killing scenes
- The mercenary was targeting him for something The Batman had done in the past
- Batfleck had in this world already lost Robin but more loss was due to follow, as hinted in Batman vs Superman.
- Mangienello reckoned it was similar to the movie by David Fincher The Game
- It was rumored to have seen several of Batman Rogues gallery opening up that world
- The Batman story developed after Ben Affleck left the role of director and Warner Bros brought in Matt Reeves as Director
- The story ultimately changed as WB made a decision to go with Reeves story over Ben Affleck's
- Affleck retired from the Batman role leading Matt Reeves to change the story and cast Robert Pattinson as Batman.
- Ben Affleck returns as Batman in the Justice League Snyder Cut and is rumored to return as Batman in the Flash movie.
THE FUTURE OF THE DCEU
- As of December 2020, The Snyder cut is officially not canon to the universe. Even though the original Justice League was edited by Joss Whedon, it makes more sense for the current DCEU that all the rest of the movies relate to that version.
- The Snyder cut whether it's awesome or not - maybe it's safer to work as if the Joss-tice League version is the one that all the DCEU characters will take cues from.
- It being in its own continuity allows Zack Snyder greater freedom to do what he wants with the movie and what he originally envisioned without trampling on the characters he helped bring to the big screen.
- At the same time, it allows upcoming DCEU movies freedom to use what has come before and expands the world into a multiverse.
- However, if the Snyder cut is a success, it pushes back to WB and DC to try and fix the situation and to work with Snyder and Ray Fisher potentially (see more on the flash movie) towards working with the future movies
- Rumors are Ray Fisher is now in conversations with DC/Warner Bros and has been asked not to badmouth the industry, fingers crossed a compromise happens and Ray can continue as Cyborg in the DCEU and any future movies and also allows him contracts for movies for Warner Brothers.
- Another rumor is that Henry Caville is in more talks with Warner Bros concerning his role as Superman - please let him be Superman for a longer time, he is great as Superman for the DC and is a talented actor.
THE SUICIDE SQUAD (2021)
- So this is a new take on Suicide Squad, called "The Suicide Squad", and will touch upon David Ayers version, James Gunn commented it is a "soft" reboot but uses several of the characters from the first movie. No Deadshot due to Will Smiths' schedule but Amanda Waller, Harley Quinn, Rick Flagg, and Captain Boomerang are back with a new squad.
- So the Suicide Squad cast are Amanda Waller (Viola Davis), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Rick Flagg (Joel Kinnaman), Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney), Bloodsport (Idris Elba), Peacemaker (John Cena), The Thinker (Peter Capaldi), Blackguard (Pete Davidson), Polka-Dot man (David Dastmalchian), Savant (Michael Rooker), T.D.K (Nathan Fillion), Ratcatcher (Daniela Melchior), Weasel (Sean Gunn), Mongal (Mayling Ng), Javelin (Flula Borg) and King Shark (Steve Agee)
- Apparently, Idris Elba plays Bloodsport a new DCEU character who wields a tactical warfare suit and was arrested for shooting Superman, with a kryptonite bullet. The character is an old DC comics character. He will have an updated origin and is a specific character and story arc around Idris Elba's new character.
- rumours were Elba was to replace Will Smith as Deadshot but to continue and leave it open for Will Smith to return as Deadshot, Gunn created the new role for Elba to do his own thing.
- The plot supposedly follows imprisoned convicts from project Task Force X and they are all sent on a new sentence easing mission to the South American island of Corto Maltese to destroy a fortress called Jotunheim which was used by the Nazis in WW2.
- Produced and directed by James Gunn
- There will be a spin-off series called Peacemaker starring John Cena as Peacemaker. John Cena said in an interview the character was supposed to be like a douchey version of Captain America - a ruthless killer who believes in achieving peace at any cost, even if it means he has to kill someone.
- Due to covid pushed back from 2021 to Summer 2022 potentially
- A trailer was shown at DC Fandom starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson
- Initially, it was rumored Black Adam may appear in the Shazam movie or the rebooted Suicide Squad, being the target for the team but this has turned into its own movie, and I'm excited to see how it turns out
- The Justice Society is rumored to make an appearance including Hawkman, which may mean it's set in the '50s. They have also suggested minuteman and Dr Fate may make an appear
THE FLASH MOVIE 2022
- Directed by Andy Muschietti who directed the successful Stephen Kings IT movie and its sequel, the Flash arrives on the big screen.
- The screenplay has changed hands several times with new directors, Ezra Miller has had an influence but Christina Hodson, who developed the Bumblebee Transformers script, which I surprisingly enjoyed and The Birds of Prey movie....I wasn't the biggest fan of the Birds of Prey plot so I hope with Batman making an appearance and the Flash I hope she makes a brilliant story/plot.
- Don't expect this to be dark, The flash comics are generally quite fun-filled, it make have tones from the Justice League movie etc.
- Ben Affleck announced he will return for an appearance as Batman
- it was confirmed in June 2020 that Michael Keaton also announced he will return as Batman
- If you've kept up with DCEU news and the rumors and opinions posted by actor Ray Fisher, the actor has stated he will not be part of Warner Bros movies or the DCEU any further whilst Walter Hamada is CEO, because of this the cyborg character has been wiped from the Flash movie or will be recast
- Update on the last note apparently Cyborg was due to have a big role and due to the removal, 30 - 35% of the plot now has to be rewritten.
- I hope DC/Warner Bros sit down and talk with Ray Fisher to resolve and fix the issues. I personally thought Ray was good in Justice League but I heard he had a much bigger role in Snyder's version and I hope the Snyder Cut is brilliant and does massively well to push DC/WB executives to rethink their plans and to reinstate him.
- Its also been announced Supergirl will make an appearance in the movie played by Sasha Calle.
AQUAMAN 2
- James Wan and Jason Momoa return to Aquaman and the movie will apparently have more horror themes to the story.
- James Wan did the work on the DC Tv series Swamp-thing which had the drama where it was delayed then launched and canceled. Swamp thing tv series had more of a horror theme, which may have done more than it needed to.
- James Wan has also touched upon doing a movie/series based on the creepy fish humanoids known as "The Trench"
- Rumour was concerning the rumors surrounding Amber Heard and ex-husband Johnny Depp, fans wanted Amber Heard removed from the role. There were rumors she had been dropped/fired however this is now known to be false and she will continue as Mera in Aquaman 2 and makes a surprise appearance in Zack Snyders Justice League.
SHAZAM: FURY OF THE GODS (2023)
- David Sandberg and Zachary Levi are back in the sequel to Shazam, nothing on the plot, there were rumors this would introduce Black Adam, BUT this will have its own story, unsure if Black Adam will have an appearance. Rumor is Henry Cavill may have a cameo in this if WB/DC sort his contract.
- Some people online have made comments to say was Shazam really successful, does it deserve a sequel - on a 100 million budget it made $366 million at the box office so it was a success for a new individual project.
- Zachary Levi commented in an interview: "I’ve seen some of this stuff bandied about on the interwebs, and people saying that if you look at the numbers that we did as a movie, that it pales in comparison to some other movies that did insane amounts. But the truth is, for an origin story of a niche DC character, I think we did fucking great. I think we did really good".
- From what I remember it was light-hearted and funny and not a bad movie
